Wisconsin Human Advocate Nakisha Johnson Awarded Vicki Barnes Community Involvement Scholarship

Columbia Southern University awarded Nakisha Johnson of Madison, Wisconsin, the 2025 Vicki Barnes Scholarship. She has worked as a program manager with United Way of Dane County and has an extensive career in case management, public service and human advocacy.

“I am pursuing my degree with renewed focus and determination, not only for personal gain, but to sharpen my leadership and expand my impact,” she said. “With this scholarship, I can take another step toward my long-term goal: launching and sustaining programs that offer education, support and advocacy to justice-impacted individuals, young mothers and underserved families.”

Nakisha plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership.

“Looking ahead, I have plans to establish two nonprofit transitional living facilities—one for homeless men and another for homeless women,” she said. “These facilities will focus on healing, restoration and long-term self-sufficiency. Additionally, I am launching my Life Coaching LLC to help individuals overcome emotional, spiritual and financial roadblocks.”

This scholarship was founded to honor the legacy of Vicki Barnes, a beloved member of the Columbia Southern University family who dedicated her life to making a positive impact. To learn more about the Vicki Barnes Community Involvement Scholarship, visit ColumbiaSouthern.edu/Scholarships.
