Take 5 With Career Development and Employer Relations Specialist Haley Underwood

Career Development and employer relations specialist Haley Underwood has been with CSU for over six years. She started her career in student support and transitioned into career services almost a year ago. Haley has had the unique opportunity to support students during the beginning, middle and end of their academic journeys and always looks forward to supporting them beyond graduation.

We asked her to share more about herself and what she loves most about her career:

  1. Can you describe your role at CSU? As a career development coach/employer relations specialist, I assist students and alumni through their career development journey. I provide one-on-one coaching, resume assistance, practice interviews, job search strategies, networking advice and career exploration. I also work as a liaison between employers and students by assisting employers post positions for our students both on our CareerQuest platform as well as closed groups. Hopefully, in the future, I plan on creating knowledge shares by these employers to further their connections with our students.
  2. What do you enjoy most about your job? What I enjoy most is seeing the growth and confidence in students and alumni when they gain clarity on their career journey. We all know that finding a job, let alone one you enjoy, is a difficult journey, but it is very rewarding to help someone see their own potential and see what steps they need to take towards that goal.
  3. Considering your job, what advice would you give to a CSU student?  Start your career management journey as soon as possible. Don’t wait until graduation to think about your future goals. Your career services department is here and excited to help you explore opportunities, start building your network and assist with finding resources available to you. The earlier you start, the more prepared and confident you will be!
  4. What is your favorite CSU memory or moment? Although I have many favorite memories, from meeting new employees, fall bash, spring flings and graduations, one of my favorite memories is working grad bash with a close friend of mine. By the end, we were able to make the tour more upbeat and it was a memorable experience we still giggle about today. It shows how humor can make any experience more fun.
  5. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I enjoy reading and learning to play guitar and piano in my free time. I read all different types of books depending on my mood that day. The instruments are still a work in progress but it’s a great creative outlet. I tend to fixate on different hobbies like crafting as well so I am sure what I enjoy this month will be different the next.
