Columbia Southern University received the Mobile Area Council Boy Scouts of America’s Whitney M. Young Jr. Service Award on Aug. 4, 2020. The award was presented at the U.S.S. Alabama Battleship Memorial Park’s Medal of Honor Aircraft Pavilion.
This award recognizes outstanding service by an adult or an organization for demonstrated involvement in the development and implementation of youth Scouting opportunities.
“On behalf of the board of trustees and the faculty and staff of CSU, we are sincerely honored to be given this award,” said CSU President Ken Styron. “One of our core values has been to support our community and we are proud to help the Boys Scouts provide opportunities for youth in Baldwin and Mobile counties. We see this as an investment that can benefit the future of our community in so many ways.”
Whitney M. Young Jr. was the executive director of the National Urban League in the 1960s who challenged Scouting’s leaders to tackle the “unfinished task of making real the dream of justice and equality” for American youngsters. Young received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969, the highest civilian honor in the U.S.
Styron serves on the Mobile Area Council Boy Scouts of America board. He received his Eagle Scout in 1986. Styron has served in many roles as a scout leader including Scoutmaster, Lodge Adviser, and District Chairman. He has been awarded the District Award of Merit, Founder’s Award, Silver Beaver, and National Outstanding Eagle Scout Award.
