Faculty member awarded Fire Chief of the Year

CSU faculty member and Center Point (Ala.) Fire Chief Donnie West has been awarded the Alabama Fire Chief of the Year for Combination Fire Departments in Alabama.

He received the award Tuesday at the summer conference of the Alabama Association of Fire Chiefs, presented by CSU and held in Orange Beach.

“This is a legacy award and I am very humbled,” said West, who has been a fire chief since 2006. “I have always said that it is not what we as fire chiefs do, but what the people that work around us do to support our mission and vision.”

In addition, West, who is also an adjunct faculty at Waldorf College, serves as the operations chief on the Alabama Incident Management Team. West also is a certified peace officer and is an instructor with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. He spent 25 years with the Hoover (Ala.) Fire Department where he retired as a lieutenant paramedic. West later joined Center Point as an assistant fire chief for 15 years before being appointed fire chief.

Center Point is the largest and busiest fire district in the state, responding to more than 7,200 calls per year.
