Summertime and Safety

Dear Students and Alumni,

I hope your summer is off to a relaxing start. The Alabama Gulf Coast beaches are busy with visiting families from all over the U.S.

June is National Safety Month and as Columbia Southern University is one of the leading educators of safety professionals and first responders across the country, Occupational Safety and Health is very important to us and our student body. This month, we recognize the Occupational Safety and Health professionals for their work and dedication.

On June 19 through 22, CSU is headed to Denver, Colorado for the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) annual conference, Safety 2017.  We are excited to see our students and alumni at the booth, as well as at a social event on June 20 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Henry’s Tavern.  You can find more information and register for the event here.  We encourage anyone from the area to attend!

We are excited to announce that we will have a special guest at Safety 2017 and the CSU social.  Scott Gable recently entered and won a contest at CSU hosted by the National Society of Leadership and Success.  He submitted a video for the CSU Knight Talk contest, a spin-off of Ted Talks, and gave a powerful speech on overcoming obstacles to get to where he is today.  Scott is currently a safety compliance officer living in Maryland. He started his journey at Columbia Southern University in November 2016 to obtain his bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health. Scott credits much of his success to the people who have led him and also those who have challenged him. These individuals have pushed him to do what was once thought to be impossible. Check out Scott’s inspirational video here.

June is also a time to honor the fathers and father figures in our lives for Father’s Day on June 21st. I am proud of the legacy my father left through Columbia Southern University and the hard work and dedication he put into creating a successful experience for our students. I also know that many of you are fathers, working hard to complete your education, provide for your families and better their lives. We at CSU are very proud of your accomplishments and want to do all we can to make your time at CSU as positive as possible.

Also, in this edition of the Communicator you will find important information about CSU’s tuition rate changes effective January 2018. CSU is dedicated to affordable quality education. Our tuition rate remains one of the lowest in the nation and on top of that, we provide course materials at no cost through various grants and programs. The complete article can be found here.

Lastly, I am pleased to share with you that CSU will be launching a new quarterly webinar, Provost Live, beginning June 22.  The goal of these informational sessions is to keep students informed and create more opportunities for you to succeed.  You can read more info about this here.  We hope to see you there!

God bless,

Robert Mayes
