Independence

One of our biggest holidays is the 4th of July or Independence Day. It is a day to be celebrated with fireworks and family and friends. Red, white and blue colors are displayed everywhere. We are all very proud of our country and the sacrifices those serving in our military continue to make for our freedom. Columbia Southern University is one of the top 10 universities with military students. We are very proud that so many servicemembers have chosen CSU to fulfill their dreams of having an education.

When I hear stories of how education has made such an impact on students’ lives, I know that they have gained independence in the working world. Whether it was getting a new job that you dreamed about all your life or maybe getting a promotion through earning your degree; this is truly how education provides independence for the working adult. Education gives us the confidence we need to open doors for ourselves. It can give you a platform to stand tall and the freedom you need to explore other opportunities.

Many years ago when my family set out to form the university we wanted independence to provide for our family; educating others became that vehicle for us to move ourselves forward in the market place. There were so many times we were not sure we would make it, but we kept our eye on our dream and over time that dream became reality. We had a saying when we got knocked down, “We did not make it this far to turn back again!” We truly felt this way. We knew there was no turning back. As we were going through those dark times I believed some how, some way we would make it.

Sometimes you just have to walk out onto the ledge in order to get a glimpse of what lies ahead. You learn to keep negative people at bay and surround yourself with family and friends who push you and believe in your dreams as well. It was seven years of hard times before we saw the fruits of our dream. So I say to you, keep your dreams of education before you and push through even in the hardest times. I can guarantee you there is a light at the end of the tunnel and what an example you will be to others by never giving up on your dream of an education!

I want to leave you with 5 tips to find true independence for your life and family:

  1. Surround yourself with people who support you and believe in you.
  2. Stay focused on your dream. Never, and I mean never, lose sight of it.
  3. Do your part to move your dream along.
  4. Keep yourself motivated by reading books that encourage and move you forward.
  5. Take a step of faith even when you don’t see the next step.

If you have a moment, please take time to blog with me and share how education has given you and your family independence.
