Scholarship offers career change for military spouse

Kristina Tyrer, of Monument, Colo., is eager to begin a new career as a recent winner of a Hero Behind the Hero Scholarship presented by Columbia Southern University.

Tyrer, a military wife who works in the financial industry, wants to use the scholarship to seek an MBA in health care management at CSU, an online university based in South Alabama.

The Hero Behind the Hero Scholarship, which honors the spouses and children of active-duty public safety personnel (firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMTs and dispatchers) and military men and women, covers tuition for up to 24 months for one specific online degree program with CSU. The scholarship is awarded six times a year to two individuals each time.

Tyrer is the spouse of Army Staff Sgt. Travis Tyrer, who was severely injured while serving his country.

“After having spent much of my time with him during his rehabilitation process, I am inspired to join those who have given us such a great experience during his recovery,” she explained citing her reason for seeking an online degree in health care management.

Having endured much with her husband, Tyrer said she is driven and determined to succeed in earning her degree and launching her new career.

“I hope to make a difference in the healthcare community and to work with other wounded warriors and their families. The healing process can be more bearable when you have the support from those who know what you’re going through,” she said.

”Although life is unpredictable, I want to be prepared as best I can when I’m faced with more challenges as a wounded warrior spouse. Life can change within the blink of an eye and I will do anything it takes to fulfill my dreams, for myself and for my family,” she added.
