Degree will help working mom serve others

Degree will help working Mom serve othersEarning a degree means a lot to working mom and wife Tracey Williams of Goose Creek, S.C. , who wants a bachelor’s in human resource management.

“With my degree I will be able to better serve the employees of the company because I will have the full training to help guide and protect them,” said Williams, who works for an aluminum manufacturer. “I will be able to better myself, my family, and the company I work for and ultimately help the employees who I am passionate about.”

She plans to channel that passion toward her online degree with CSU thanks to winning the Hero Behind the Hero Scholarship. The award honors the spouses and children of active-duty public safety personnel (firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMTs and dispatchers) and military men and women, and covers tuition for up to 24 months for one specific online degree program with CSU. The scholarship is awarded six times a year.

“In turn, when I achieve my degree, being in Human Resources, I will also have the ability to help others in their aspirations of achieving additional education and possibly be able to help remove some of the obstacles they have encountered out of their way.”

Williams is the proud wife of Lt. Ransom Allan Williams of the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office based in Charleston, S.C.

“Being an officer’s wife is more like being a single wife and mother,” she explained. “I was not able to go back to college before because of the expense of online classes and I could not go to a traditional classroom because my husband’s schedule is not 9 to 5, nor is it even a scheduled 8-hour day and I would miss my classes because someone needed to be home with the children – and that was me.”

While time was an issue, Williams added that money also posed an issue. After hearing about CSU from a co-worker, she decided to apply to the online university and on the same day, she applied for the Hero Behind the Hero Scholarship.

“Money has always been a hurdle and my husband’s schedule has always been the other. Columbia Southern University has just removed all the hurdles that were in my way, I can now achieve my dream!”

Williams added that she is overwhelmed with appreciation for the scholarship opportunity.
